There are four phases in the Atkins diet:

- This is the first phase of the Atkins Diet. It can last at least two weeks. It is the most restrictive phase. It allows you to eat very little carbohydrates. You can eat only 20 grams of carbohydrates a day.
- Ongoing Weight Loss
- Phase two alows you to eat more carbohydrates. You can eat 5 grams more carbohydrates each week. The first week you can eat 25 grams, the second week you can eat 30 grams and so on until your weight loss slows. Then you go to the next phase.
- Pre-Maintenance phase
- In this phase you can increase carbs by 10 grams a week as long as you continue to lose weight. You will increase carbs until you’re losing less than a pound a week. You can continue this phase untill you reach your individual level of carbohydrate intake at which you neither gain nor lose weight.
- Lifetime Maintenance
- After finishing the Pre-Maintenance phase, and after you found your individual level of carbohydrate intake, you will adjust your lifestyle with the perfect pitch of carbohydrate consumption for weight loss maintenance, and you will keep your desired weight all your life.
